Gabions are double-twisted wire mesh baskets made of hexagonal woven wire, Each gabion is usually divided into cells by wire mesh panels called diaphgram positioned at approximately 1m centres to stregthen them. In order to reinforce the structure, all mesh panel edges are selvedged with a wire having a greater diameter than the mesh wire. The steel wire used in the manufacture of the gabion is fabricated from a soft tensile, heavily zinc coated or electroplated, and woven into double-twisted hexagonal-shaped mesh.. If required, a 0,5-1 mm nominal thick PVC coating is then extruded over the galvanized wire to provide added protection for use in aggressive environments with acidic soils and water. The double-twist of the woven wire mesh provides integrity, strength and continuity to the structure by adding a non-raveling effect that prevents any accidental damage from spreading.
