Description:
Vermiculite is the generic name for laminar, hydrated ferromagnesian-aluminum-silicate minerals that resemble mica in the crude form. It has a great number of industrial uses by virtue of its expansion behavior on heating. When heated rapidly to 900-1000 centigrade, interlaminar water turns to steam and causes the mineral layers to exfoliate or separate into worm-like pieces. This forms a material with low density, excellent insulation properties, good absorption, ion exchange capacity, chemically stable and non-toxic. The above properties make it widely used in construction, agriculture and horticulture, and industrial application.
A. Quality
The exfoliated vermiculite has a different colour according to the difference in fe2o3 content. We classify the vermiculite into two types, silver-white and golden-yellow.
Type (I) , fe2o3 content 5-13％
Exfoliated vermiculite colour gray-silver-white, similar in colour to South African material.
Type (II) , fe2o3 content 16-22％
Exfoliated colour golden-yellow, similar in colour to Australia and India etc.
Volume coefficient rate: 4. 5-10 times:
Impurity content: 8％ max.
Adhere moisture: 5％ max.
The golden-yellow vermiculite has a high reputation in Japan and South Korea, used in agriculture and horticulture, for it is stable quality and very competitive price, while the silver-white vermiculite is popular for use in the construction industry
B. grading
1. Type I-silver-white vermiculite.
Dfl have designated various grades dependant on the origin of the vermiculite, eg hbw-a, hbw-b, hbw-c and kv. Grading depends on the market.

2. Type II-golden-yellow vermiculite.
